Morrison Utility Services and Yorkshire Water

Improved traffic management planning to decrease fines and enhance productivity.

Morrison Utility Services (MUS) improves Yorkshire Water streetworks traffic management planning to decrease fines and enhance productivity.

The Challenge

With the surge in demand for road space as utility works programmes get back to normal, at a time when roads are being reconfigured for more cycling and walking space - getting streetworks right first time to reduce disruption on the highway even more important.

As an innovation-driven organisation, Morrison Utility Services always aims to deliver enhanced benefits for its clients and looked to improve the streetworks planning to increase process efficiency, consistency and decrease cost.

Following the successful development and implementation of the Works Planning module with Yorkshire Water, it identifed that the creation of traffic management (TM) plans could be also be improved, which were at the time being produced with a complex CAD package that only one user could access – an unproductive and protracted process.

KEY BENEFITS

Virtually eliminated Section 74 fines

Reduced number of failed plans being created and submitted

Improved relationships with HA and between office & onsite teams

“We have seen a marked improvement in the quality and consistency of works applications being received. They are all in the same format, with comprehensive documentation, which makes it much easier and quicker to process.“

The Solution

The Traffic Management module offers utilities & utility contractors a streamlined planning, coordination and design process that delivers cost savings with a reduction in rejected applications, outsourced services and fines.

All forms of traffic control, such as portable traffic signals, can be accurately designed and incorporated into a detailed TM plan, including auto-populated document templates, for submission to the Highway Authority (HA).

The Signage module extends these capabilities with the ability to create full Chapter 8 signage layouts. These can be easily plotted, and with the simple Google Maps interface combined with the detail and precision of OS MasterMap™, creating a TM plan is simply a matter of dropping signage icons on the map. Layouts can be visualised in-situ on the highway via Google Streetview and this virtual reality view gives an instant insight into viability and safety of the works site.

The majority of Yorkshire Water TM & signage plans are now being produced quickly and inexpensively in-house using this solution. With nearly 100 HAs also using this, it has created consistency in the TM process -  all plans are now sent by email with pdfs of the TM, signage and TTRO documentation, which is welcomed as information is recieved in the same format every time.

Since adopting the solution it has already

  • Significantly reduced failed plans being created and submitted
  • Virtually eliminated Section 74's, as onsite teams know exactly what signs to collect and return
  • Improved relationship with highway authorities
  • Improved relationship with between office and site teams
